This mixed-use building is part of a proposed sustainable neighborhood development in Malmo, Sweden. In order to minimize environmental impact, the building’s second and third floors are primarily constructed from recycled shipping containers, whose modularity and potential for cantilevering informed the design of the upper levels. The market hall’s need for an expansive, high-ceilinged interior space on the first floor prompted the use of a mass timber column grid, which supports a CLT slab that the containers are stacked on top of. Inspired by the typology of an open air market, a skylight-topped atrium cuts through all three floors and spans the majority of the building’s length.
